In 1998, after being in the business as an installer since he was 17, Randy Foster opened Creative Covers, a Texas based company serving New Braunfels, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston and the surrounding areas.
Randy’s father Joe, a successful engineer by trade was ready to hang up his engineering hat but he wasn’t ready to retire. So in 1973 he began Foster’s Ports & Patio in Longview, Texas. ‘It was a small company, servicing the immediate area. We offered only a base model car ports and patio covers, but the business thrived.’ During summer breaks and after school Randy would work along side his Dad in an old Ford truck, that until recently was still in the family.
In 1990 Randy started his own company after moving to Austin, called Texas Cover Concepts. With the advancements in product quality and an expanding product line he began offering additional options such as screen and glass room enclosures. ‘Room additions give families more choices. In the past, if you needed more space you moved. Families had to be uprooted, kids had to change schools, a new 30-year mortgage had to be signed. With all of that, most families just did with what they had.’ Things have changed dramatically since then. ‘Now you only have to determine if a patio cover or a glass room fits your families’ needs best. From the economy line that will fit most anyone’s budget to the full ‘bells & whistles’ deluxe model – we can build the addition that will make your outdoor living space more ‘livable’.
In 1995 we moved to New Braunfels to live in the family homestead. ‘The house had been in the Foster family since 1932. We knew that we wanted the quiet of a small town to raise our son instead of the hustle bustle of the big city. It seemed the natural choice and New Braunfels is so charming.’ With the move, Randy was approached by Structall, one of his suppliers. They were looking for someone to manage their San Antonio branch. ‘With his background, management skills and extensive product knowledge it was an excellent match.’ Working directly for the manufacture gave Randy the opportunity to become even more familiar with the product line, expand his knowledge of the industry and help others. ‘It was a great help to the clients to have someone with his expertise on the fulfillment side. He could recommend various options to help them build a better product, or on occasion catch when something had been ordered incorrectly.’
In 1998 with their son nearly two years old, Randy was ready to go back into business for himself. ‘Once you’ve worked for yourself, it’s hard to go back to corporate America. Although it was a great experience, I wanted the flexibility of making my own hours, directing my own destiny, making my company what I wanted it to be.’ He started Creative Covers and with a couple of phone calls to previous clients, he was back in business.
Recently Randy made the move to the Fort Worth area and has already begun to develope relationships and prove his value in the community and as a professional at building patio covers, and all types of covers and enclosures. He is bringing the same dedication to quality and integrity that he has had from the beginning to the Fort Worth area and is worth taking the time to get to know as a person and a contractor.
